Why Do You Need Dental Scaling?

Even when we brush our teeth every day, plaque can still collect in hard-to-reach areas such as between the teeth and along the gumline. When plaque is left for too long, it can harden into tartar.

Tartar cannot be removed with a regular toothbrush. It needs to be cleaned through dental scaling using specialised equipment by a dentist.

Scaling is important because a buildup of plaque and tartar may contribute to red, swollen or bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, rough tooth surfaces and gum disease.

During scaling, the dentist removes tartar from the tooth surfaces, between the teeth and around the gumline. The teeth will usually feel cleaner and smoother after treatment.

The recommended frequency of scaling is different for each person. It depends on the condition of the teeth and gums, how quickly tartar forms and daily oral-care habits. A dental examination is needed to determine when scaling is appropriate for you.

If your gums bleed frequently, visible tartar has formed or bad breath persists, arrange a dental examination.
